December’s Caribbean Lunar Eclipse Cruise

What could be finer than a total lunar eclipse viewed from the tropics?
I’m pretty excited about this and I think it’s going to be lot of fun. I’ve been asked to speak on the Cosmic Trails cruise that Sky&Telescope and Insight Cruises have put together. The cruise goes all kinds of really interesting places (including the Panama Canal, Costa Rica, and Aruba, to name but three) and runs from December 13th to 23rd this year. And on the night of the 21st we’ll get to see a total lunar eclipse from sea.
Insight Cruises specializes in hosting what they call “seminars at sea.” These turn an already interesting cruise into something really special for travelers wanting more than the standard eat, sleep, tour, eat again, routine. Their motto is “venture • witness • think • learn.”
I’ll be giving four presentations during the cruise:
* From Galileo to Apollo: A History of Lunar Exploration
* Gearing Up for a Moon Shot
* Viewing and Understanding the Moon
* Exploring the Night Sky with Binoculars
And I won’t be alone. Fellow Moon nut and well known Apollo expert Andy Chaikin will also be speaking. Andy has written several books, including what is in my opinion the definitive chronicling of the Apollo Moon missions, A Man on the Moon. Also, S&T deep-sky maven Sue French, super-photographer Wally Pacholka, and noted planetary scientist David Stevenson will be giving talks. Should be great.
If you’d like to join us, or find out more, visit the cruise web page. Hope to see you in December!
